MUSEUM INFORMATION

As part of its mission, the Gulf Coast Chapter-National Railway Historical Society, Inc., operates the Houston Railroad Museum.

MUSEUM MOVED INTO TEMPORARY STORAGE

The Houston Railroad Museum has been moved by Union Pacific from its long-time home in the Railwood Industrial Park to a storage track in Houstons near east end. The last eight blocks of the move were handled by the locomotive and crew of Genesis Worldwide Logistics, our new neighbor in the east end. The move was necessary because our former landlord at Railwood wanted to increase their commercial pipe yard.
The move was three years in the planning. Two major car repair projects had to be completed and all brake lines had to be replaced and tested. Safety appliances were replaced and donated flat cars were loaded with containers and a non-operational tank car. The Federal Railroad Administration had to get involved because one locomotive had to me moved with non-working brakes, requiring a waiver of normal procedures.
A new museum site in Tomball is under discussion. The city of Tomball has suggested we move to a site near their restored depot on the BNSF mainline. BNSF has agreed to install a temporary switch in their line to allow the equipment to be delivered to the site and preliminary engineering and planning studies have begun.
